My '85 has an antenna amplifier of some sort mounted too, and I get good reception.

Occasionally, when one of the airplanes I am flying in flies through some ice, we get a bit of static on the radio. We can tell if the connections to the shark-fin antennas on the plane are getting corroded too- it does the same thing. A quick connector cleanup by the mechanics and the static goes away. I bet you've got a dirty contact somewhere.

I don't listen to radio; south Florida radio SUCKS so I have my iPod attached to the stereo via input bus, I can select songs or artists or playlists from the head. That and the car is so screaming loud [I always drive with the windows down] that I can't hear much of the music anyway.

N!
