The "solar toilet" on the Mount Whitney trail is pretty horrid. I understand fully the necessity of its design but the odor is simply ghastly. You can find your way to the "99 switchbacks" by smell alone. Once you get above that on the switchbacks the air is pure and clear though.

The smell is hard to overcome. Actually looking down into the compost pit (where the hole goes below the floor/toilet level) and seeing the contents was enough to make me have to choke back a puke. It was really gross.

To the credit of the National Park Service, the toilet itself and the actual schitter are fairly clean though. Just the smell would choke a yak.
