Ok, first thing then it to locate the source of the noise - Transmission, back side of the engine, front of the engine. center of the car, etc.
I'm not trying to give you the run around, but without a good location, the possibilities for a strange whining noise are almost endless.
How does the car run otherwise? - any other strange problems you've noticed?
