Frankly, even though you pulled the pin out, that fact that it is not robust, I think Scorpion would rather err on the side of caution and fix it for you rather than risk a rider somehow insufficiently implementing their own repair. This is rather extreme but God forbid something ever happened, I would not want to be Scorpion and explain to a jury that they had an opportunity to correctly repair your helmet for a minor expense and they declined.
I would recontact them and confirm that that is their position. Ask to speak to a supervisor or manager that may have a better understanding of the company's liability exposure.
