What is flikes? You mean flicks, dances around?
The 944 wiring is such a POS I wouldn't go blaiming the alternator quite yet. First thing to do is clean up or replace the cable going from the negative post off battery and the other side of the grounds to body and engine block. Then install a supplemental ground from the front of the engine block to the frame rail under the headlight bucket - I do it to the left side. You will see several brown grounds bolted to the rail.
Then clean up or replace the positive cable that connects the battery, starter and alternator. Replace with some nice #2 or #1 arc welding cable would be best. Next replacement would be the wire run from the battery to the fuse board. That is quite the joke.
