There's been quite a bit of discussion on this. Search the archives for "child seat" and similar.
About two months ago, there was a detailed message showing how to modify a $19 Cosco toddler seat to fit perfectly in the rear seat. This is a shield-type seat.
Porsche also once sold a "Prince" shield-type seat that fit in the rear seat. You see them occasionally on eBay. Do not mistake this for the Britax-made Porsche booster seat that you'll also find on eBay -- I've tried the Britax seats and they don't fit well in the rear.
For older children who can use a booster seat with the stock three-point belts, the Century "Breverra" fits nicely. It has a rounded base that is quite short (front to rear). My 3-year-old son uses that.
