I don't even remove the disti cap for this procedure.
There are four marks around the main pulley on the engine. 3 marks are exactly 120 degrees apart, and the fourth is sort of next to one of the other 3 marks. The fourth is the timing mark for the appropriate point where the coil fires at the number one cylinder.
So I turn the main pulley with a socket and ratchet until the "fourth" mark lines up with the index on the engine case, continue turning until the next mark lines up and stop. This mark is the TDC mark for either number 1 (or number 4). In this case you feel the rocker to find out which one. If it is loose at 1, you are there. If it is loose at 4, then you start adjusting valves at number 4 and then follow the firing order of the engine for the rest of the cylinders.
You just turn the crank 120 degrees to line up the next mark and that is TDC for the next cylinder.
I never had to even remove the dist cap for that purpose.
