Draco is spot on, as usual. I have also had very good luck doing the following:
1) spraying electrical contact spray into the intermittent switch while vigorously working the switch back and forth.
2) the wiper stalk is very similar to the turn signal stalk, in that the contacts get bent and dirty. IIRC, the stalk can be re-bent and cleaned in situ.
