My 2001 Boxster base 2.7l I feel does not give me a push in the back when I take off. It only has 217 hp. But when u wind it up in the gears at around 4-5k rpm the engine and exhaust noise sound interesting. With the stock exhaust actually I dont hear much exhaust noise which is fine by me. As the above posters say it is not so much the power but the way it handles. The S has more power but I would think with the bigger engine especially you always have to be aware of the speed limit. If u get one, make sure it is a good one - PPI etc. I have had no regrets buying my 2001 base. For interest sake you should try the base, the S and some other make with lots of hp and see which gives u the biggest smile
