Huh? A kink isn't hugely bad but it does indicate potentially damaged wires. The worse the kink, the more potential for damage. Gigabit is even more susceptible to slight damage. Ever notice when you bend a wire a few times in the same place, it gets narrower at the bend? This creates resistance. Although there is a lot of overhead designed into the wire, if there is a problem, it's silly not to look closely at all the issues when troubleshooting.
Rule of thumb for Cat 5 is that the cable can be bent to any radius larger than 4 times it's diameter.
