Look closer at the CE ring and you'll see it has an open side (you can see the springy ring thing in there) and a closed side. The closed side faces up toward the cylinder head.
Actually the CE rings have been argued that they aren't even needed. Example being the later 3.2 engines which have the same cylinders (95mm size, interchangeable with SC) and they did away with the CE ring groove. The sealing surface on the 3.2 cylinders is just plain smooth & flat.
