Trying to slide the stack in to a case mounted sideways on an engine stand would be risky and a pain in the a$$!

I've done it both ways and have to say that I prefer it on the engine stand. It really is no big deal getting the gear stacks in sideways. Once they begin to engage the final drive housing, they don't fall out easily.
