If you're getting that popping that is maybe better known as "pinging" or detonation from lean burning, consider changing your air filter if you haven't. I think I've discovered the bike that I rode for 5000 miles than blew up was all the lean combustion that came from a clogged K&N. Stupidly, I never considered it being the culprit of all the pinging until I pulled the filter out during the teardown.

If you have a clogged air filter then it will not get enough air causing it to run rich not lean.
