Either way works. If you just drop the trans, make sure to loosen the mounting at the front, because you will want to pivot the drivetrain down a little bit to make sure the transmission clears the rear panel.

Pretty much the detailed instructions are about what bolts to unbolt, and what wires and cables to unhook. Things like the transmission ground strap, the reverse light wires, the clutch and speedo cables, the starter wires (make sure you disconnect the battery before unhooking those!). And the CV joints, and I think that's basically it!

One or both of the upper bell housing bolts are actually removed from inside the engine bay. You'll find the nut on that end.

Or you can yank the whole drivetrain. There are a few more things to unhook, but it will give you the opportunity to do other stuff that is more difficult with the engine in the car....
