The reinforcement plates will work fine on that damage.

I have used them on way worse ripped out metal.

Your idea of using a nut on the backside of that check strap should also work.

I would do a couple of things to make that work easier for you.
1) you want to drill out the remaining threads on the strap with a clearance drill sized so that the M6 bolt can pass through it.

2) if you want to make a super clean repair, take your new nut and have it Tig welded to the check strap. Will make it much easier and less fiddley than having to hold nut/bolt for install.
