Stripped threads on Door stop
Hi all,
Driver door "popping" turned out to be torn sheet metal...managed to get the door stay out (I put this one in ~ 6 years ago...should have used reinforcement kit then!) and noticed the lower hole was stripped of threads...metal shaving came out wrapped around the bolt. ![]() Sheet metal around the hole in the door stay that's still threaded (top area) is torn Sheet metal around the hole in the door stay that's stripped (lower hole) has an elongated hole. ![]() Opinions: Will reinforcing kit work with this amount of damage? Do I need another door stay given that one hole is stripped or can i just put a locknut on a longer bolt on the backside of the stay? Appreciate any feedback. Thanks, john

The reinforcement plates will work fine on that damage.
I have used them on way worse ripped out metal. Your idea of using a nut on the backside of that check strap should also work. I would do a couple of things to make that work easier for you. 1) you want to drill out the remaining threads on the strap with a clearance drill sized so that the M6 bolt can pass through it. 2) if you want to make a super clean repair, take your new nut and have it Tig welded to the check strap. Will make it much easier and less fiddley than having to hold nut/bolt for install. Cooper |
