I've done that and found (logically) that you can get away with it if the intercooler is big enough. Full bay is big enough, half bay is not.
The air drawn through the IC when the lid is blocked off is phenomenal. Make sure the firewall insulation is in place and the engine tin is good as air will be sucked in from every hole.
