72 4 sp 915 Question

I've been cleaning up my transmission and have a couple questions... There's a bracket on a stud that the PET describes as the "retaining bracket for clutch cable - 901 423 369 00". Mine has a broken canvas strap hanging there. What's supposed to be hanging from the bracket to capture the cable? Sorry, it a bad pic but here's mine (it may be a little more clear on the bigger pic further down):

It appears the PO JB welded an area around the speedo shaft (highlighted.) There doesn't appear to be any cracking or oil leaking. Is this a big concern. The speedo output appears to be out-putting:

When I parked the car, the trans shifted fine except for the completely worn shift linkage. I'm guessing the life of a 915 subjected to a 2.4T wasn't too harsh. I plan to reinstall with new fluid, new clutch plate and bearing as it has an aluminum PP. Is there anything else I should check while it's out?

Gratuitous pic:
