A couple of things:
First, if you were flooring it from take off, and the turbo kicked in around 4k rpm, that's a little too high...
Second, likely the shudder was just the engine bogging down a bit, cause it was at low rpm, where the turbo engine makes less torque then the NA engine (s). It could also be the clutch, but I doubt it.
Unless the car has a performance clutch, it really shouldn't be that much harder then yours, possibly something binding.
Insurance increase is usually not dramatic between a 944, and a 944 turbo, possibly around %15-25 or so.
