Test drove that Turbo then, pretty nice car! Once it hit around 4 grand or so it just took off! What a difference between my N/A. I do have a couple more questions though. I started taking off from a slight incline and the car shuddered when leting out the clutch. It only did it that one time though. It has 82,000 on it and owner is not sure if the clutch has been changed but it was inspected and it's fine. With shifting, the clutch was a lot stiffer then mine. Mine a lot softer compared to his. When pushing the clutch down it got stiffer, same way coming up to. Also have any of you went from a 944 to a 951, what was the insurance increase?

As a teenager you're gonna take a hit. Prolly at least 25% increase.

A couple of things:
First, if you were flooring it from take off, and the turbo kicked in around 4k rpm, that's a little too high... Second, likely the shudder was just the engine bogging down a bit, cause it was at low rpm, where the turbo engine makes less torque then the NA engine (s). It could also be the clutch, but I doubt it. Unless the car has a performance clutch, it really shouldn't be that much harder then yours, possibly something binding. Insurance increase is usually not dramatic between a 944, and a 944 turbo, possibly around %15-25 or so. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

1. Stock turbos have slow boost response due to the cycling valve and KLR programming (this reduces the impact to drivetrain). Get a boost enhancer if this is a problem.
2. Clutches on 951s are noticeably harder to push in then on N/As. This is probably due to the turbo pressure plate. Even stock clutches can support a lot of hp. Good luck - make sure it actually has 83k though. Erick |

wolfrpi, I've driven a couple of near stock 951s, and boost came in much earlier than 4000rpm. However I'm sure the launch has something to do with it. But boost at ~3200 rpm, and 4000rpm are two very different things either way, what do you think?
Also, the clutches on the cars I've driven were no harder compared to my own car, the 84 944, with a sport clutch in it. Ahmet |

My 951 has the boost coming on at about 3000rpm. The clutch did feel a bit stiffer than a regular 944, but not hughly different. 3rd gear on a stock one from about 2500 and moving at 35mph is a real rush. 4th will do about the same but you rapidly will start either a)running out of room where I drive enthusiastically or b) will be seriously infringing on the speed limits.
If everything looks kosher, get the 951, you'll never regret it. Just don't get a ticket or you will have a very nice piece of German sculpture in your garage for several years. Dave951M Not all therapy requires a couch. [This message has been edited by Dave951M (edited 05-06-2001).] |

I bought mine with a bad turbo, tons of play in the shatft, and mine hit at about 4000 also. Would bearing wear account for suspended boost?

Thanks a lot guys. I am getting hold of the insurance company tomarrow after school. The car will be under my dad or moms names plus I will be 18 in 4 days.
I will look into the clutch more and take it to a shop to have them check it out. It's just a lot harder to push down when it's about 1/2 way up. The rest of the way up it is somewhat like mine. Could it be something binding then? I don't know the exact name, but that fork or whatever? With the boost, I only got one it good once all the way through the range when I was getting on the highway. The boost came in earlyier then 4, but I mean like a lil bit after 4 it really kicked in! Thanks again ------------------ Penz 1985.5 944 My 944 page |

penz, it's hard to say for sure, but from what you describe about the boost it sounds like the throttle response of a normal 951. to help somewhat, if you do get a 951, be sure to get a boost enhancer from lindsey racing.com. will help to rectify a deliberate wastegate fault designed by porsche, and will allow for a bit earlier and harder boost.

Turbo should kick in at a little under 3000 rpms. Something is wrong. Full boost should be there by 3000 rpm.

My experience is exactly the same as yours....MY '87 951's clutch shudders a bit(usually when cold)...and is much stiffer than the one in my '83 na...I'll have to check again, but I'd swear mine kicks in between 3000 & 3500...not at 4000...If you get "the vibe" when you drive it...then GET IT!...I just got mine a few weeks ago...I knew it was mine the first time I drove it...I've been in love ever since!!!...Good luck!...Cus

I have only driven it once so far, I would like to drive it again before I buy it and also get it inspected. The owner said he had it inspected to make sure everything is good to go. Thats why it goes in the shop Wed and he is calling me Thursday when he gets it back.
Well whatever it was I got I need that car! haha If I get that car, I'll be one happy guy with a sweet a$$ car! Hey cus, also I was updating my website today and got some pics of MSN, I added your car to my website. ------------------ Penz 1985.5 944 My 944 page [This message has been edited by Penz944 (edited 05-08-2001).] |

My 951 clutch (car has 64,000 miles)is much stiffer than my daily driver na 944(199,000 miles), and always has been. My 951 boost comes in at 3000, more at 3500 and its wild at 4000 like a rocket ship (Star Treak's Enterprise). The clutch pedal has a preload spring to make it easier to push in. My NA 944 could be adjusted too soft and my 951 too hard. The Haynes manual shows how to adjust it.
