I've been taking a look at early 997.1 Turbos and 996 Turbos. For me it would be mainly an "everyday" Porsche that has mostly modern conveniences, easy to drive, and where I don't mind putting a bunch of commuter miles on the car (I drive 40 miles each way). I still drive my air cooled's plenty, but wouldn't mind having an everyday car like this. There's a PCA member in my area here who has 450K+ miles on his 996 Turbo, has literally bit a 4 season (New England) daily driver for over a decade. So when properly maintained they've got plenty of longevity.

The 996 Turbos are probably at or close to the bottom of the depreciation slope, as iceman said they 997s probably will depreciate more. Neither is likely to become collectible or appreciate in the next decade or more, but in terms of value for money it's pretty hard to beat a 996 Turbo for $35-45K or a 997 Turbo for $60-70K.
