It will depend on the camber, spring size, wheel offset and the idiosyncrasies with each car and their front fenders. (I've found that many cars seem to have different clearances) In my opinion, 295's will be really tight under stock guards. You will definitely have to roll the inner guards too. By fitting 295s on 10"s you will bag out the sidewalls. I ran 275s Nittos all round on 10"s and had good results with them. I did try 285 Hoosiers and they did work but that's as wide as I'd say are suitable for a 10" rim.
We run 295s all round on our car now but that's on 11.5" wheels. They are neither bagged or that stupid stretched look. On a 10" wheel I would say you will get overheating and premature wear as they roll around across the rim laterally. I say you would get better grip with smaller than 295s up front on 10's. Tyre choice is more important than just fitting the widest rubber possible for the sake of it. I do agree with running a square setup though.
