Valvoline VR1 is getting hard to find..
Last time it took 2 trips to local parts stores to find it. This time it took 3. First store didn’t carry it second has stopped but they did have 8 quarts left in the storeroom. I ended up at O’Rileys they DO carry it for now..
Heck most of the oil I saw at store #1 states “For 2012 or newer engines”. It’s been forever since I’ve seen good old Shell Rolleta 20w50. Even the oil for these cars is getting scarce.

Some of us stocked up on a bunch in the older bottles last year when Autozone was blowing it out at $1.00 / quart.....

The other day I was looking for mobile one V twin which I always have a hard time finding enough of an usually have to go to two or three places. But I was with my wife and I didn’t want to trouble her by going all around town so I saw 4 5quart bottles of VR one and decided to grab three. I didn’t know it was hard to find and it certainly wasn’t a problem at at o’Reillys In vegas.

what really pisses me off is all the parts stores are not carrying anything but 0-? or 5-?. maybe 10-? but pretty much any 50 is no more.
walmart has mobile 1 for $22 for 5qt jug. that's just over $4 per qt. less than half price. I have spent several hundred dollars stocking up for all the cars, every time I go there i clean them out of 15-50

I've found the performance motorcycle shops to be the place for oil.
We have a Cycle Gear 15 min away. Lots of good oil in 15/50, 20/50 and 60 weight if you want it. But I clean them out whenever I buy. The looks I get buying 15 quarts in a motorcycle shop is classic. Always a comment from someone.

don't use VSR1 if you have a cat
I would also not use it as it looks like it is not synthetic. the zinc may be good for the valve train but with a turbo the heat is too much. for one I think syn helps reduce chances of coking in the turbo and coking can cause waaay more damage than ANY oil with a little less ZDDP in it. I have personally seen coking come lose and plug an oil hole for the valve train and eat up a cam lobe and rocker.

Valvoline makes a full synthetic VR1 or if they don't now they did a few years ago. It cost twice as much as the non synthetic VR1 oil.
The full synthetic plastic bottles are black and the oil is blue. The non synthetic VR1 bottles are silver grey color and the oil is the usual light amber color. |

i talked to a guy at mobile 1, he said not to use Vtwin in my car, I think it was detergents.
I very strongly suggest anyone that wants to use it call and talk to mobile 2 first. I had already put it in so I went to the store and got a bottle of the additives, now I am back to 15-50.

Seems this "OIL" thread raises it's controversial head about once a year...maybe our moderator should simply attach a "quick" thread that links all the previous ones all together.
What would be of better help, would be a break down of some quantitative evidence showing what type of oils caused what type of failures vs maintenance/procedural failures causing damage. In the end, I'm thinking the evidence of oil related failures vs proper maintenance/procedure related failures would quell most of the "oil-type-to-use" concerns. After all, dino oil with zinc seemed to work just fine on air cooled engines for many decades before the onset of synthetic oils. Come to think of it, I think Porsche even raced these cars before synthetics were available, who'd of thunk it! Most coking concerns can be squashed, buy simply allowing the turbo to cool down before shut off, I even think that most rocker arm/cam lobe wear can be attributed to lack of proper warm up. That's just my .02 worth of commentary...other opinions may vary. Mark |

A possible new alternative
Howdy,
I forget where I got this info. Amsoil evidently has an oil (new, I don't know) called Zrod. Supposed to be Amsoil synthetic with friction package (I believe they mentioned ZDDP) required by older flat tappet stuff. Maybe worth a look ![]() Gary |
