Rear fender flares,ducts,vents.
Did any 1978 930s ever get produced or factory fitted with the vents in the rear wheel arches. Or even a special wish fitment.
I have only heard of the 89s having them other than the slant nose. If not how are they added to a 930 ? ![]() |

Mines an 88, non-flat nose, and has them...
I think they were always an option in the 80's? |

Is it possible to tell if they have been added.

SBK, based on your pic, the vents on that car are not an original Porsche installation as the trailing edge of the vent/duct opening does not follow the arc of the fender flare. If you do a google pic search for "930 505" etc. you'll see what I mean.

Hello RawkneesTurbo,
Do you know how these are added ? Are they just the ducts or a whole rear quarter as I can not distinguish any welds around the ducts. They are steel and the vents plastic. |

Nope, I don't know the details about how the fender ducts were added (neither factory nor aftermarket versions) - maybe someone here will pipe up about that, butt who knows, since the 930 forum has been seriously dead meat as of late (don't know why, but many of the regular posters have all butt disappeared).

I always wondered if these things could be made to be functional... For example, connect tubing to the duct and have it blow air into the engine bay? At speed, 100mph +, that would provide additional cooling I would think.... |

You cut a hole in the quarter and weld the box in. It would come as a whole unit and welded in. The slats would screw in from the back. I have done a few sets over the years. The trick is to weld in spurts as not to warp the quarter. These shown are not factory. You can tell from the design, but they are still ducts. You can make them function and most of the aftermarket ones would channel to behind the rotor. You could also plate the exit and run a section of hose to a backplate.

A factory M505 slantnose from 87-89 has an oil cooler in the rear vent on the passenger side. |

Thankyou Porschephd,
I must say whoever welded them in really did a great job as from inside the guard it appears as if it could be a stamped/pressed panel. I will get a pic up of the inner guard. |

Nothing a little welding, grinding taping and welding and repeat can't accomplish. It is tedious and I have NO desire to do it again anytime soon. It was pain but I couldn't stomach to pay someone else to do it when I knew I could. That and it was done the way I wanted it.

Howdy chaps,
I did up a small pix based website on this conversion when Golden Custom Coachworks did mine 30 years ago at the link below. Yes, those photos are indeed shot in black and white, part of the scrimping one had to do when attempting to make their own slant nose as a broke youngster back in the day. https://petergz.smugmug.com/Cars/Porsche/Golden-Custom-Coachworks/i-T8fkB4H |

Peter,
That brings back memories of when I did my slantnose conversion. I did all the work myself, learning how to weld sheetmetal and shape metal. I painted the car myself. One thing I did later on was re-engineer the linkage on the Mazda headlight mechanism to eliminate headlight shake.

Howdy Dennis,
An old schooler! I did the very same, 24 years ago I took this 930 apart, flipped it on its side and started over. Never painted a car before (or since, too macro, prefer motorcycles) and it's only through the virtue of superlative paint (Glasurit) and a great gun (Sata LMB92 gravity feed) that that paint is still hanging on..barely to this day. Sized up the situation and realized I could single handily easily lift onto and flip the body shell of my 930 around on either side with only a few two by four runners and a spare broken off torsion bar stuck in the jack port in my garage. Didn't feel like more than 250 - 300 at the time, maybe less. Enabled a much more thorough and comprehensive resto on my terms rather than taking it to a shop with a rotisserie. https://petergz.smugmug.com/Cars/1977-Porsce-930/i-pMjKNMg Last edited by Peter Guldan; 12-11-2016 at 06:50 PM.. |

Need Replacement Fins
Not sure if this string is stiff active but I have a 1980 930 Turbo (EURO) that has fins in the side like this and they were factory according to my COA from Porsche. Not sure if they look exactly the same as these.
Does anyone know the original OEM part number for these from Porsche? I recently had the paint on my car restored and the shop broke one of these... |

The org were made of wood with a fiberglass cloth then resigned over.I highly doubt Porsche sells them as they were hand made from there special wishes program. If it was me I would try and repair them if possible.
