930 Clacking noise

Was driving my 89 930 Friday night. Out of the blue it started having a clacking sound. No smoke, good oil pressure, not low on oil, it starts on one kick. Towed it back home did not want to take any chances. Car was running perfect prior the occurrence.

Sounds like the noise is coming from the passenger side of the motor on the top

how many miles on the engine

sounds like a rocker.
pull the valve covers and check for lose rocker or even a rocker shaft that has come lose.

I don't know if or what a broken valve spring would sound like but that is another possibility

Exhaust leak? Do you have the air injection plugged? One fallen out?

Sounds more like valve noise, than exhaust leak. I will check this evening.

I had one come out, trust me, you know it.

well? i would say broken valve spring.....remove the cover and inspect each cylinder just like you would do the valve adjustment..so they rock then you can use your hand and if you are able to push on the rocker arm that is the culprit..it is an easy fix with the correct tool

Thanks Ivan, plan on inspecting it this weekend.

Is it something I can tackle myself. Unfortunately the Porsche mechanic I know moved to Colorado. I dont like taking the car to shops that I am not familiar with. I do all the basic maintenance on my car. Never delt with valve adjustment
I had a 930 back in the 90s I remember watching my buddy adjusting the valves, was not too bad.

Locate the bad one.. i think you can do it your self.
You need a compressor to put air into that cylinder and the tool to compress the springs in order to remove the 2 keys which hold the washers on top of the spring..the tool is this one...
one is for the intake and another for exhaust side..
maybe even our host has them in stock ....

I have a nice size compressor. Let me see about locating the tool.

broken spring may be hard to spot (esp if inner). If not visibly broken you can check them by getting the engine to the usual valve lash spot, then leaning on the rocker with a lever type tool - something you can make up. Can prob take a pic of something I made some time ago. The valve with a broken spring will be quite soft compared to the others - obvious.
Can do in place. To get compressed air in cylinder you need to fab a tool which the compressor can hook on to and had spark plug fitting at other end. Can do a pic in a few days if nothing else shows up. Need to get about 100 psi in there.

the tool Alan mentioned is simple compression check tool where you would remove the gauge .One end goes to the air and the other to the cylinder after you remove the spark plug .Also you have to remove the valve inside the tool-which is there to hold the air inside the cylinders when you do ,the compression check.
If you are in Europe i can lend you the tools ....since i do not know where u r ...

Turned out to be a loose rocker, what a relief.

Easy fix - depending which one and which way around the locating bolt is fitted.
