How do I remove the trailing arm bushings?
Trailing arm is out and I want to replace the rubber bushing.
Rubber came out easily, but the metal shell won't come out of the arm. I saw where someone used a saw to cut through the shell, but I would rather not do that. Will heat work? terry

I used a vice and over sized socket on the end you're pressing the old bushing towards and a smaller one on the side lined up on the old metal part of the bushing. Used a map torch to as well to heat it up.
Easy to take them to a machine shop to to press out and press in the new ones. Hindsight it would be worth the 20-40 bucks to do that!

I was able to use a chisel to get them out.
If you are careful to match the angle of the cutting edge of the chisel with the surface of the arm, you will only leave small scratches. Once I got it started coming out, I used a bigger chisel to keep it coming. I have a press, so going in with the new ones should be easy. I could post a pic if anybody cares. terry

Anyways, just saw elephant has this service: https://www.elephantracing.com/porsche/911/component-services-for-911/trailing-arm-services/ Wonder If I should just throw the arm, bearings, bushings and hub in a box and get it assembled by experts?

The service is tempting. If I wasn't retired, stubborn and cheap, I would do that!
Removing the arm for the bearings makes some things easy and other things hard. Lining up things for assembly is easier when you can see from many directions. Holding/positioning the heavy arm and tools and pieces gets tricky with one set of hands. Since I cleaned the right arm while it was out, I am probably going to remove the left one too. As stated earlier, I was able to get the arm bushing out with a few chisels and no heat. I'm attaching a few pics to show the first chisel lined up with the arm to cause the least scratching while prying the 'cup' out.. The rubber part has already been removed. Once you get it separated a bit, you are home free. ![]()
