LF RUF 5 Speed Gearbox
Greetings,
Breitwerks is getting spooled up to complete the conversion of the "Beast" to a RUF BTR Spec. The only thing I need is a RUF 5 Speed Gearbox. The original conversion was more or less a cosmetic job to showcase all of the crazy Ultra-Smith Electronics. ![]() Thanks, Mark

Maybe you could elaborate on ultra-smith electronics?

The car was modified by Ultra-Smith with the following:
a) The "Winkler", which is the License Plate folds down by pushing a button while the car is in reverse b) Upgraded Stereo with amp and additional speakers in the cabin c) A smugglers Box which opens at the push of a button d) Integrated Radar Detector where all of the controls were integrated into/under the dash e) Auto up/down switches for the windows d) A car phone mounted between the seats Unfortunately, the Ultra-Smith Electronics did not stand up to the test of time and I had the electrical system returned back to stock to mitigate a bunch of shorts which ended up blowing up 3 CDI's. So, all of that stuff has been removed although the switches remain scattered about. With this restoration, I am having a new stereo put in and I would like to get the one touch window switches working again. The regular switches work, just not the one touch switches. I have a copy of the build sheet that I can post later this week. Mark

Unless you’re really stuck on originality, you’re better off using a G50. Those 5spd conversions were clunky, the parts for repairing 5th/reverse are hard to come by, and it still is based on a 930. It will also cost about twice the price of the G50 route.

A g50 will take some modifications to fit. It's an 86.

Buy and modify (short bellhousing) a G50 would still be cheaper than getting an original 5 speed ruf transmission. And better shifting.
I did the g50 conversion in my 79 930, and I did not find it tricky to no. No need to modify the torsion tube

Hi Axel,
Thanks for the note. Breitwerks found a shop that can convert my 4 speed to a RUF 5 speed using RUF Parts for around $30K. I can't see dropping that much into the car above and beyond the cost of getting the engine and turbo back up to snuff. The transmission rebuild is $6500 so that is a pretty big difference for an extra gear. Thanks, Mark

What are the engine specs going to be to make this the "beast"?

We are looking to upgrade from the 3.3 to a 3.4 with RUF BTR Compression ratios and CAMs.
That is the plan now. We might look at custom CAMs to get some low-end torque for drivability, particularly if we stay with the 4 speed. The 5 speed may be a bridge too far as cost goes. It would be cool though! My mechanic has each customer name their car. So the slant was dubbed the Beast years ago. With the B&B Headers, RUF Intercooler, and .9 atm of boost, it gets up and goes. I call the Cayenne S the Tank. I always liked Panzer Kampfwagen 955 but the woke crowd would lose their freakin minds!

Not surprised to hear how cost prohibitive it is. I have an NOS 5/R shift sleeve for the Ruf, and I wouldn’t part with it for less than $1200. Regular 930 shift sleeves are $200.
If you want to stay 4spd, and optimize it to the engine, lmk. I continue to manufacture 930 race ratios and generally have the most popular ratios on the shelf.

That build sheet brings back such fond memories of the 80's/90's and all the crazy stuff going on with these cars in that era! There was an Ultrasmith 930 here in the area, I almost bought it but the lady who owned it (took it from her husband in the divorce) was such a Bxxxch I decided not to. Ended-up providing my assement to Sloan (Sloan cars) and he purchased. Car was Pewter with lobster interior.. still around up in the NE somewhere.
