930 rebuild break-in tips

Hi there,

So I had my 930 engine rebuilt over the winter, with new pistons/cylinders as well. My mechanic will likely put me through a break-in regimen, but I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with this/can give me tips or lessons learned. Should it be highway break-in? RPM limits? etc.

Thanks in advance!

Basically you want an oil that will allow rings to bed in. Not sure what your options are on that side of the world, but others will give you a steer. That oil will be dumped after a few hundred miles.
You want to work the engine under load and over a rev range. Without thrashing it - allow it to bed in. Babying it will not help - detrimental. You want acceleration loads and decel loads. I would be looking to use around 2-3500 rpm to start with , gradually moving up to around 4500 before I changed the oil. I would not use full throttle during this time, and don't lug it in the gears. Free reving with medium loads. A brisk sunday drive sort of thing. Thats what I do. Seems to work OK.

Thanks! He used flame rings in the rebuild, would this make a difference in terms of the details below?

Nope. It is just about letting the engine bed in under load. The worst thing to do is tip toe around worried about working it too hard.
But I see no point in thrashing it to the redline either.
Just give it a good work out.

Agree with Alan L. I have broken in two turbo motors and a couple NA motors. The only thing I do differently is heat cycle the motors two to three times with decent oil to wash out some of the assembly lube. Change the oil and filter then take it out for a spirited but respectful drive.

I then change the oil again after 500 miles.
