easy cam timing tip
Well, for the 1-3 side anyway.
Just reassembling my engine after chasing a gremlin that I never really found - oil in #1 cylinder. So the outcome is uncertain. But I did stumble on a simple cam timing method. I have only pulled the 1-3 side apart, so using the cam timing on 4-6 side to set #1Inlet. I was looking for 1.75mm. So I set the engine to #1 TDC firing. I had all the rockers installed - but the valves backed right off (except #1 I which was at 0.1mm). I set my dial gauge on the #1 I rocker then rotated the engine half turn to #4TDC. This is the point the #1I should be open to my valve setting. I had the two drive bolts for the scavenge pump in the end of the cam. I just rotated those in the right direction until the dial gauge moved to my timing number - 1.75mm. It happened the cam was happy to sit there. I had removed the lock pin on the cam wheels and had the bolt finger tight so the wheels could rotate without moving the engine. Pulled the bolt - inserted the lock pin and cracked some torque on the bolt. Rotated evrything one more time and the timing mark came up exactly on what I had set. A one shot set at the timing. Unfortunately it won't work for 4-6 as no drive pins in the cam end. But dead simple, and every bit helps right? Alan
