Cool 911 carrera wide body conversion wheels questions

Hi guys,

Doing a wide body conversion on my 911 Carrera 86 with 9’’ fender on front and 11’’ in rear. Im currently running on original Fuchs wheels 7x16. Now I’m trying figure the wheels set up with these new fenders… can I fit 7x16 205/55/16 in the front and 8x16 245/45/16 in rear …with spacers ? If yes what will be the spacers size.

8x16 or less expensive than 9x16 thats why I try to put 8x16 … but if 9x16 its THE option and its way better I will buy 9x16.

Thank you

How do those fender sizes compare with stock 86 turbo flares?

Where do they measure from, the inside of the wheel well?

If your flares are stock width or more then 7x16 front and 8x16 or 9x16 rear were the factory options, with a 25mm spacer in the rear. Wider wheels with the right offsets will also fit.

Are you planning to go with a turbo engine as well?

Show us some pictures of your car.

You are going to have figure out your current offset. Here are some wheels I used to have for my conversion. These were perfect fitment for a wide body conversion. You can cross reference these widths and offsets with your current wheels and figure out how wide of a spacer you will need on this website www.willtheyfit.com

I have a set of Fikse FM10 rims I had on my widebody conversion. Would be willing to sell them. 9x17 and 11x17.

I am running 18 X 8 and 18 X 10 on my '87 narrowbody.

If I had 930 flares, I would be running like a 17 X 10 and 17 X 12, but I do have very stiff suspension.

Just want to point out one thing, if you are able to fit a 245 tire you should really use a 9" rim. 245mm=9.64" wide, you can end up with undesirable results using to narrow of a rim. EDIT, As you likely know there is a much better selection of tires if you go up to 17" dia.

I too am planning on welding in 11" and 9" 930 fender flares on my 912, with a serious HP upgrade (>500), 930 transaxle/shafts/CV joints, Carrera trailing arms, welded pivot points on trailing arm housing, #26 torsion bars, spring plates, back seat sheet metal dog-house for the higher 930 transaxle, etc.

Regarding your spacer question, I believe for 930 fender flares you wouldn't need spacers for 8" or 9" wide wheels. However, it's not the wheel width, but rather the final tire width and outside diameter that are important for fitment.

As an example, I am leaning on 9x17 and 11x17 wheels (all from Maxilite), with tire sizes 17-255/40 in the front and 17-295/35 in rear.

The width of these tires (inches) is 10=255/10/2.54 for fronts and 11.6=295/10/2.54 for rears.

The outside diameter (inches) is based on the equation

OD = (wheel size in inches) + (tire width in mm)/10/2.54 x (tire height in % of width)/100 x 2

where the width is in mm and height is percentage of width. The doubling on the trailing end of the equation doubles what you essentially calculate, since it's only for one side of the tire.

For a worked example, for the rear tire size of 17-295/35, you would get

OD = 17+295/10/2.54*35/100*2

which gives 25.12, or 25" -- which is perfect.

for the front tire size of 17-255/40, you would get

OD= 17+255/10/2.54*40/100*2

which gives 25.03 or 25" which is perfect.

As long as the outside diameter of the tire doesn't exceed 25 to 25-1/2" you'll be fine for any 912/911/930. Appropriate wheels for the "5x130" standard Porsche bolt patterns on 912/911/930 are available on the 930 page at Maxilite ( https://shop-us.maxilite-wheels.com/930-turbo-30 ). After you select wheel height/width, and tire size, just ask Maxilite support how many spacers you'll need for 930 -- as they've been providing fitment for wheels on 356, 914, 912/911 and 930 (with fender flares) for decades.

The fender size tells you what wheel widths to use, 9&11. Standard fenders are 7&9 which are the wheels you have now. Don't see the need to add wider fenders unless you are going with wider wheels to fit them.
295mm wide tires in 17" don't exist in a street tire as far as I know. 245/45 or 255/40 plus 315/35 are popular 17" tire choices for widebody fenders. Same widths can be found in 18's. Nothing is available in 15 or 16 that looks good in my opinion.

Thanks for the heads up -- which I would probably have noticed when searching/ordering. Originally, I started plugging in different widths in Excel, when using a constant 35% of width as height, and 295 resulted in an OD of 25. One minute - I'll run 315 just for grins... they are 12.4" wide and have an OD of 25.7" -- so that works. Found some nice Nitto's and Michelin Pilot 4S that are 17-315/35.

i wouldn't worry about your rim and tire selection until you complete your conversion. your spacers and offsets are predicated on a few thing
fitment and your rim and your rim preference. Are you looking for a deep dish look without spacers or a shallow look with a 4" block of spacers ?
.. i personally prefer the deep dish look . and ordered my rims from braid 11x17 rear and 9x17 front. with the offset 10mm short of hitting the outer rim with the deepest offset i could fit . This way i could do my final fitting using a thin spacer if needed. you can always add a spacer to adjust fitment but if you order your rims with to much off an offset with no room for a small spacer you cant adjust for rubbing.

This tool is quite handy for making sure your fenders are installed evenly and for figuring out your off sets
