I need some motivation

I have had a goingsuperfast EFI kit sitting in my garage gathering dust for 6 months now. I need some motivation to get going and install the EFI upgrade on my 930.

Help

shoot me some pics of EFI engines guys!

I haven't downloaded my camera with the latest pics with all the wiring installed, but here are some pics before the engine went in. I'm in the process of tuning it now. I've had some communications problems with my Motec M600 ECU, but they may be caused by problems with my laptop. Last night I reformatted the laptop so it's all fresh now.

It's flat bottomed. I bought that to race this year and it's just sat there. I'm hoping to get back to it next year and run a full season.

sorry Steve but Im hijacking this thread twice!

Rob, good looking engine, how did things turn out on the dyno and whats your engine spec? I'm pretty sure our specs are quite close (except you have actually built yours and mines still looking like a long block!)

Andy,

Other than the usual (and some unusual) longevity enhancements, and some very careful assembly, the following modifications made a difference to my engine:

3.4 pistons/cylinders, actual CR is 7.3:1
GT2 Evo cams, timed to factory spec
Very massaged heads: 52 int. valves, 43.5 ex, expertly ported
Extrude honed Carrera manifolds with 70 mm TB
Mototron 60 lb/hr injectors running at about 3.2 bar
Holcombe headers - 1.75 in, with Tial WG and Borla muffler
Garrett T-66 turbo, by Kevin
Custom IC
DTA ECU, tuned by Dave Capurro (while I "helped")

The engine has three maps: 92 octane pump fuel at 0.9 bar, 103 unleaded at 0.9 bar, and 103 unleaded at 1.2 bar. For the high boost map, there was a flat torque plateau at about 618 ft-lb from 4500 to 5250. Peak power was 622 hp at 5500. Boost apparently comes on hard from 3750 to 4000; the torque rises from 400 to 552 across that span. Boost is controlled electronically, through a solenoid controlled by the ECU, with a 10-15% reduction in boost at part throttle -- something I wanted for my road racing (track day) application.

The middle map (0.9 bar with 103 unleaded), which I'll use most often, shows yet a flatter torque plateau of about 500 ft-lb from 4500 to 6000, and a power peak of 550 hp at 6000 rpm. The pump fuel map shows numbers that are slightly lower, due to further timing retardation.

There's probably a lot of "show-off" power left on the table with this engine. It could easily have run a lot more boost and I'm sure would have produced horsepower numbers well over 700. Also, the cams caused the torque to peak earlier and fade more than I expected above 5500, hence the horsepower number could be significantly higher if the cams were designed to produce torque higher in the rev band. But I'm happy with it as is and it should be an incredible track performer with very large and usable torque range as well as a conservative margin of thermal safety and AFRs in the low 12s across that range.

congratulations Rob, they are superb figures. as for my engine spec being close to yours- I think I was being a little optimistic! my build has been as text book as I could make it, plus tricks from this place. in the case i went with fancy bolts, twin plug, flame rings, big oil pump etc but I have 3.3, 964 cams, standard carrera head ports, unported carrera manifold, 1.75 vision headers with a too big turbo (it was very cheap and came with the headers!) custom intercooler and either sds or maybe autronic efi. Ultimately Id like to achieve a streetable 500 horses (with a different, more streety turbo) . with the current turbo im expecting lots of lag but to be honest I really dont mind because if im getting lots of lag then that means i must be driving it which at the moment seems like years away! congrats again. do you have any recents threads on the build/dyno?

Steve,

Great. Get that engine out! I hope we helped motivate you. I move very slowly on my projects too. The Porsche is just a hobby and I have a very full plate of other priorities. And to hurry an engine like this not only adds stress, but means that you're going to have to pay a premium to get parts and services, or worse yet, you might have to cut corners. My heads took months. The manifolds took over a month. The machine work for the case, crank, rods, pistons and other bits took months. The assembly took months. Custom mods took months. The tuning process took a month. And it was all done is serial fashion -- you can't necessarily do all these things in parallel if you're going to do it right. In all, this engine build took me three years! But you should be able to do it in less...

After 29 months I finally drove my 930 again today. I'm still working on some pre-dyno tuning so I can break in the engine and after a few runs I've got it working pretty good.
