New 930 Owner
Hello everyone, I just got my 930 home on Monday night and I have a few questions about the car. I bought the car from the second owner in Dallas TX and drove it home on Monday afternoon to my house in Atlanta. The car did fine over the 800 mile trip and it wasn't nearly as tiring as I thought it would be.
Once I got the car home I started picking over it to see what the PPI missed and find out exactly what I had. The car has the following mods that I can see. PowerHaus Headers with heat exchangers. B&B intercooler B&B Exhaust K27 Turbo Issues: The car seems to have what sounds like an exhaust leak. It is only noticeable at low RPM and under load. After researching the PowerHaus headers it seems that they are a B&B copy which are known to leak. Does this sound correct? The air injection system has been disabled and partially removed. I'm planning to remove the entire system and I'm aware that I need to plug some holes that the injection ports will leave behind, the plugs sold by our host are listed for 1975-83, can someone point me towards the correct plug? Are there any write ups describing what exactly I should remove? When the car is warm and the engine is idling there seems to be a whirring sound coming from the engine compartment, it almost sounds like a power steering pump that is low on fluid, bringing the RPM up above idle silences it. Any ideas on this one? |

Thanks for the reply. Pictures will be up tonight after I wash all the bugs off of it, Louisiana was not friendly in that respect. I'm going to spend some time under it and I'll get some good pictures of my engine and exhaust.
I think the whirring sound at idle may be the air pump drive belt, the PPI mentioned that it needed replacement. I will try removing it tonight to see if it changes anything. Does this sound feasible? |

Congratulations on your buy! And welcome to the forum. That noise could be your air pump's belt...Maybe it is too tight and it is straining the bearing? It could also be the pump itself. Maybe a bearing is going out. But you said it has been partially removed, so is the pump still being driven? If the pump is still being driven and some of the other lines are only partially connected, maybe the other noise you hear is the pumping of air...Not an exhaust leak.
As far as another exhaust noise possibility goes...Do you have a wastegate muffler or straight pipe? If you have a straight pipe, you may be hearing the escaping gases coming out of it. This happens when you start pushing some boost (about 3,000 rpm in my car). It can sound like air escaping under high pressure. Welcome! |

The whirring sound is likely the oil sump pump at the air pump. I don't have an airpump anymore, but the cam driven oil sump remains for the turbo oil return line.
I'm guessing here.. but I'm pretty sure that's what it is. I hear mine as well and that's where I have pinpointed it to. I'm posting prematurely here.. as I would generally wait until pictures have been posted

I removed the belt for the air pump this afternoon, the belt was completely smooth, it does seem a little quieter at idle now. Just knowing that thing isn't sucking up HP makes me feel better.
I got a few decent shots of the underside. Everything appears to be in working order and once I get the rest of the air injection pipes out of the way I can clean it up. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here she is in all her glory. ![]() ![]() ![]()

That's not a rock, that is the Porsche special parking tool #451. I have a few extra for sale if anyone needs one, ground shipping only.

I have the powerhause headers from 97. They look nothing like the ones pictured on your car. I've had no problems with them at all. I wouldn't say that about some of the other things they advertise but that was then.

Those look like GHL headers. They are good ones.
The sweet whirring noise 911 motors make is usually a combination of the cam chains and engine fan doing their thing. . . Air cooled motors have no water jackets, so more mechanical noise is heard. and, Congratulations, very nice car. |

I don't think they are GLH's unless the design changed before I bought mine 6 years ago or so.

There is a metal badge welded to the passenger side heat exchanger that I can get a picture of tonight. I may also have the documentation from when they were installed, I'll see if I can get a date off of it.

I have no idea about the wheels, they are 18s and the tires are 315s but I'm not sure how wide the wheels themselves are. I'm getting the original Fuchs too once the seller ships them, the centers are white.
Here is the tag on the header.
