"tasteful" weight reduction
I'm looking to remove some 'excess weight' from my modified 930. Does anyone have a 'list of items w/weights' that could be posted.
I would imagine significant reductions from: 1. power seats, in exchange for lite wt. racing ones 2. removal of all A/C components 3. back seat and bench, replace w/lite wt. carpeting 4. standard door panelw/pocket, exchange for RS w/door pull 5. battery exchange for Optima 6. rear window, exchange w/lt.wt. polycarbonate 7. blowers in the foot wells perhaps add up to approx 250lbs..??? for a few hundred $$??? 'Tasteful', to me, would mean not like it was radically missing stuff.

I'd think the AC components would come pretty close to that 250 lbs all alone?
Swapping the impact bumpers/shocks for fiberglass covers would probably save a bit more, too. Swapping stock hood/whaletail for fiberglass ones, too.

What does your car weigh now?
As a simple point of refrence I have an option delete '78SC with steel 930 fenders, power nothing, FG bumpers, no sunroof, 930 engine and 915 tranny. Wieght with a full tank of gas is 2720 pounds. I have a full interior with manual sport seats and carry tools and a spare. I'd like to get below 2500 pounds but do not see how that can be done and still retain a comfortable street car.

FWIW my stock 930 rear bumper weighed 45lbs including the bumper shocks and the tin heat shield. I replaced it with a "tasteful" RSR style glass bumper from Rennspeed which weighed 6 lbs. Might have added two lbs of heat shield mat and silicone etc. The glass bumper is tasteful, but my front bumper still has the rubber bellows which now look out of place.

*Is your exhaust stock?
*What year? *Not cost effective as #'s but may enhance overall: lightweight clutch/flywheel if longbell *If upgrading TB's or Sway go hollow *Loose the Lloyd mats *I'd consider the Poly window kind of extreme if cars sees much street use because of scratches *new carpets lends itself to loosing console *foglights = brake scoops *CF sunroof panel to get weight out of roof and could be reversed rather than welding Yeah, I would also have to agree with A/C being closer to 80lbs depending on year.

A/C off my 79:
Compressor Brackets 5.33 Ft. Condensor 2.89 Rear cond. And comp 23.80 Fan 3.47 Ft. Cond Fan 2.04 Left hose 6.11 Evap and Rt hose 8.82 Dryer and hoses 3.59 Hose brackets 0.99 Ft cond guard 1.98 AC total weight 59.02 My car weighed 2900 before my project started and weighs 2766 now. I can still drop about 80 lbs with new seats and wheels, but I'll add it back with a new A/C system. The other big loss items were the clutch and the CIS system. Unfortunately my monster intercooler weighs 30lbs.

Thanks David for exact A/C weight. How much did/does factory IC weigh in comparison? 30# for the added efficiency and thermal load doesn't seem that bad. Too bad its up top.

How much weight have you guys been able to get rid of by switching between stock carpet and RS style carpet and door panels?
Is it necessary to scrape out the sound insulation inorder to get much savings from this mod? Thanks

IMO, tasteful weight reductions can be gained by going with f/glass RUF style front and rear bumpers and also a f/glass wing. The OEM stuff is pretty bulky and heavy

How much louder are our 930s when you pull out the factory carpet and sound deadening in exchange for a RS carpet kit?
I am going to start this project next weekend but if the thing is going to be ear bleeding loud without some substitute sound deadening I am not sure if I will take the time to try and pull that crap out and rather will just swap carpet.

I'm in the process of taking some "tastefull" weight out of my car as well. So far, I have 154lbs out, here's what I've removed:
rear seats, carpeting, qtr panels, sound deadening, rear seat belts, radio, speakers, A/C (completely, all hoses etc.), rear wiper, door panels. I have yet to install the RS carpet kit, and I'm also putting in a Heigo roll bar (very light, will post weight when measured). Plus, I will be replacing the seats this spring. I'm hoping for a total loss of around 300#, to be offset by the new seats, RS kit, and bar. The car is louder, as I did get a chance to drive it w/o any carpeting, but it wasn't loud enough fpr me to complain. I think the engine sound pad is still in place. It too will get the boot when I get around to it. I'll post some pics and actual component weights later. The sound deadening was by far the heaviest. Also, the battery will be replaced with a 15# Odyssey unit. My goal is to have the car look "complete", hence the RS carpet kit.

Wow, David 4.5"
OT OT OT How do you determine the trade off of heat sink/surface area vs. air flow through the core? When do you make this compromise and to what extent?

If you are talking about the tar pads under the seats and footwells, they are good for about 7 lbs a side
