Do 1979 930's have the rubber centered clutch ??

Yes, Porsche changed to the rubber centered clutch discs on the 3.3 Turbos. They tend to work fine on relatively stock cars, but once the modification bug bites, they don't hold up to the increased power for too long. Age also plays a big factor in their failure.
The good news is, you can swap a rubber centered disc for a 3.0 liter 930 spring centered disc without any modifications.

I am wondering if I should change the clutch on my 930.. it's a 79 with only 15K on the clock since new... so I am sure it's old and dry!!
What do you guys think,, drive it until I have a problem? or simply replace it? Thanks guys! EM

If you have the engine dropped anyways, it couldnt hurt. I wouldnt drop the engine just to replace the clutch though, If you start fixing things that arent broke on these cars you wont have any money left for the fun things (turbo, intercooler, exhaust, etc.)

The "rubber" in my '87 gave way with absolutely no warning at 36,000 miles. The car had never been tracked, was babied it's whole life, and had practically zero mods (B&B headers). I nearly over-reved the engine when it happened! I'm told that's one of the issues with the rubber centered disc, it doesn't provide the same wear feedback that a traditional clutch does....it just sort of lets go! BTW, there was plenty of material left on the disc, it was the rubber puck that just ripped!

In my history that came with my 3.3 I found some paperwork relating to the clutch failing after the car was only a year or so old. It didn't state what happened but I am guessing the rubber failed.

ooh.. man you guys give some food for thought.. I may error on the side of safe and just replace the old clutch .. it's better safe than sorry! A clutch package is cheaper than a top end or total rebuild on the 3.3
