Removing muffler/cat from turbo?
I have an 83 turbo that I tried taking the exhaust off after the turbo. I could only get at one of the four nuts.
Can anyone tell me the procedure for doing this? Do I need to take off the valance or bumper? Thanks- Craig Backer |

If you haven't done it before (and have made or purchased the right tools to get in that tight spot) you will likely need to remove both. It will make things a LOT easier. Try removing the valance first and see if that works for you. If not then remove the bumper.
Soak those nuts good overnight with your favorite liquid wrench.

Try this tool out. I'm planning on using this when I get around to replacing the muffler, turbo, etc... Then use a tap/die set to chase the threads before install. Of course you can never go wrong listening to RarlyL8's suggestions on here....

Unfortunately if you cannot get a ring spanner around the nut you will not get a nut splitter around the nut either.
Those nutsplitters are excellent for removing headers though.

The way I read the original post the problem is not that the bolts are siezed but that Craig cannot get to the bolts. Correct?

When I pulled off my whole exhaust system I started with the muffler and worked back. There was a unique two nut connection on the back side of the turbo...each of the back two nuts had a welded metal band between them. I didnt re-install them.. they were too rusted..nice thing though... they braced themselves as you back out the bolt.
Brian you know if porsche sells the connected two nut bracket? my local P dealer didnt have the part.

I was actually completing this same job myself today... just installed Rarly's zork tube. Hands down the easiest and least frustrating method is to remove the bumper. Other than having to disconnect the accordian thingies on either side its a real quick and painless job.
