Well considering it was only driven by a little old lady from Pasadena to church on sundays, why did it need an engine rebuild after 35k miles??
hmmmm

Idle in freeway traffic or slow city traffic w/ air on can put a lot of unrecorded miles on a 930. Also I always upgrade from the stock trombone to the later oil cooler W fan as was a factory improvement on later 930. One of the few things that were improved upon after 1978-1979 otherwise in most cases "the best " years ,in my opinion, if sensibly upgraded. Great "new buyer to the marque" German racing silver color also. I'm sure it will seem like a reasonable price after a good real leather smell and spirted test drive to one who just sold his Ferrari or muscle car or after driving into the lot in one of the latest SUV type of boring rides.

I read this listing and many many others for the past 3-4 months. Now this is the third time I've posted this comment from a local Porsche mechanic. "Turbos either need major engine repair now or will need it shortly" so figure it into the purchase price.

I'll tell you I've been booed down for this before but I find almost without exception - regardless of miles, PO care - most 930 have had their engines rebuilt.

I think Brian asked for really high mileage 930s and got no response. Where are these high mileage motors? The prospect of owning a 930 TURBO is beginning to remind me of small aircraft ownership.......money pit.

Most of low mileage cars with rebuilds were probably purchased by the 'more money than brains crowd'. Lets get in and Turbo this baby out of the driveway. Seriously though, if these cars are treated properly, and warmed-up before going 8 or 9 tenths, they will last a long time. At 60 Grand for this one, there must be 20 to 25 grand worth of cash in the trunk.

Cheers

As I am in the market for a 930 and do NOT want to rebuild the engine until I rack up some miles, can someone tell me what is actually happening to these engines that require a rebuild under 100-150K miles.

What is the actual failure mechanism? Symptoms? Who is diagnosing the "bad engine?" Are these engines that have been tuned to higher HP levels?

The only thing I can think of that could go bad, beside a leaking cylinder/gaskets, is the valve train (guides and seats) and rings. Besides that, isn't the engine mainly hard parts and bearings. Bearings really shouldn't go bad under 100K unless something really went wrong during ownership.

If full engine rebuilds are really required under 100-150K, I may return to looking for a g50 3.2 and ask myself what the engineers on the Turbo project were thinking.

People can offer cars for sale at any price they like. It never means they'll trade on or near those offers. Wanna buy my 1996 Jeep Cherokee with 140k miles for 25K its a classic.

CHOOCH!!! GAWD that's funny!!! I plan to use that one at least five times today in various meetings!!! I think it was Top Cat that used to say "chooch"!

I rebuilt my engine at 42,000. To be honest, the oil leaks from a car that was never driven very much was just too much to bare!!!

I know it will break down after I say this, but you can't imagine how relaible the car has been for me, post engine rebuild...going on 12,000 miles with the new engine!!! A true work horse that I treat with the utmost care and she usually rewards me. I guess the tranny will be next to go???!!! Possibly the infamous rear wheel bearings???
