Ugh... Quick Fix???
Everytime I seem to get rolling on this rebuild I manage to break some completely obscure part that requires a Porsche special order (last night was the chain tensioner banjo bolt). I think the motor is beating me at this point...
So the latest SNAFU is the little ball joint piece broke off the throttle plate. It appears that this piece is press fit into the lever. Is there an alternative to buying a new lever? Get I get a ball joint that screws into the hole or am I just screwed? Anyone ever done this before or am I alone in this saga? JB Weld??? ![]() ![]() So close... yet so freaking far. ![]()

If you are good you can drill and tap a hole in the back of the ball joint and then bolt it back on. I've never done it but it seems reasonable for someone like me who's sitting behind a keyboard.

BTW, what is that aluminum piece where the AC should be that I have circled in your pic? My car doesn't have that.

That is the big a$$ a/c mount that the compressor bolts to. Do you have a/c?
I had to take that big ba$tard back off to get the d@mn heater hose hooked up to the outlet. Yeah, this is like the world's most difficult puzzle only made more difficult by not actually having all the pieces in the dang box when you start the game. Drill a hole in the back of the ball joint... you must be smoking a joint sitting there behind your keyboard ![]() I actually thought about spot welding it but a replacement is like $20. It is more the embarrassment of having to call to order yet another part that I screwed up...

![]() I have AC but the mount doesn't look anything like yours. Mine is steel. At least yours weighs less. ![]()

I would stick it back in the hole and weld or braze it back in place.

A couple days ago a guy brought me two of these balls which had threaded studs, he wanted them threaded to some other pitch. He got them from an auto parts store which carried retrofit gas struts.

Two quick zaps with the MIG made everything better. I did order a new lever, but that will have to wait till the next time I pull the motor. BOV back on and the valve covers are next!!! If I am really good I will get the tranny bolted up tonight... nah, I am not that good

I just finished putting mine back together tonight. I just got the bumper installed. Now I just need to do some final tuning.

Nice!!! What did you do to the BOV??? Did you polish it? BTW, did you remove your dizzy when you cleaned up your motor? I am betting against myself on having got that in correctly. I hope the dang thing will at least start up.

Since we are posting pics of what our cars "should" look like... here is mine before I defiled her
![]() Actually all the good pics are on the other computer... this one is for my engine rebuild stuff. That poor bastard being towed away in the background in my old 914. This pic makes me happy and sad. (wow... that sounded queer. Gotta go do manly things in the garage now... what can I break next) ![]()

I just used a soft wire wheel to polish it up. I wasn't looking for a mirror polish, just something to shine it up a bit. Yes, I pulled the dizzy. It's easy to do. Just make sure you're TDC on #1 cylinder, rotor pointing to the line on the dizzy body. I needed to replace the o-ring on it. I took it down to the case.
