K&N to replace the stock airbox?
I was at the dyno the other day and the tech mentioned I could get a little more HP if I were to swap the factory airbox for a K&N element.
I don't see that mentioned very often as a slam dunk or obvious upgrade like the WUR, Intercooler and Turbo, so I have to ask ..... any substance to his statement? If so, best source? Part number? Approximate cost? Any pics of one installed (We all like pics) ![]()

No increase from what I've heard. If you want to clean up your engine compartment, then get a BMC or similar air filter. Fabspeed sells them and maybe others.

OK, turns out the Fabspeed unit is what I was thinking of.

I'm using a home-made version of the Fabspeed (modified a stock airbox to accept a cone K&N. It's a dead ringer for the Fabspeed). More HP? Hmmm....who knows, but you do get a little more intake air velocity sucking noise, a cleanable filter, and it opens up the engine bay back there. I think the manufacturer claims something like 10 HP increase, probably bunk, but maybe a little better throttle response.
To add one more piece of confusion and doubt, I've read posts on this topic where some people feel the K&N filter technology is not what it's all cut out to be. So, if you switch to K&N, you let dirt into the engine. Some people's opinion; not mine obviously since I use K&N's on 6 vehicles from Harleys to 930's to MGA's to Toyota's to Mitsubishi's. |

I cobbled this together in about 30 minutes to do some CIS tuning after the umteenth time removing the intercooler and monster airbox to get to the WUR.
Liked it so much I left it. Been on for a couple of years now with no obvious ill affects. The ancilliary hoses have little filters on them as well. You can now hear a very cool whoosing sound just before boost hits. I've dynoed the engine with the stock air box, my little filter, and no filter or assembly at all with results that showed no significant measurable difference in power on my mild engine. ![]()
