Oil problems
I have a stock ’87 turbo, after a short drive on the freeway, I discovered there was lots of oil in the air filter housing and the air filter was soaked with oil, after cleaned the mess up replaced air filter, changed the oil filter because I thought the check valve was bad, I also cleaned the oil separator inside and out, drove it again but problem still exists, I disconnected the breather hose from the oil separator to the air filter housing drove it and the oil was pouring from that hose and the air filter housing was bone dry, but when I connected the hose back the oil appears in the air filter housing again.
Oil is @ the lowest mark of the dip stick @ operating temp. Oil pressure is in between 1 and 2 bar @ idle 950rpm, 4 bar @ cruising. Turbo seems boosting correctly. The oil got sucked into the air filter housing has some yellow substance mixed in with the oil and the oil filler cap is cover with yellow paste substance also. Seems to me less oil is being sucked into the air filter housing @ lower rpm and more oil is being sucked in @ higher rpm, like on the freeway driving when the turbo kicks in. Hope someone had this experience before can help me to solve this problem. Thanks, Yahow |

Question
If you were to pull off the breather hose that attaches to the hard line on the very top back side of the motor (near the firewall) in the same area of the pressure sensor. This is the soft-line that attaches to the bottom of the oil seperator. When you do this, is there oil spewing out at idle? Also, another way to test is when you're oil filler cap is off, if you put a surgical glove over the hole would it blow up at idle?
If these things are happening you could be dealing with a serious problem inside the motor where you are seeing increased pressure. Have you ever had a leak down test performed on the vehicle? May be time. Not sure if this is the problem or not, but since you have covered most of the bases in the first post there is nothing else that I can think of off the top of my head. Maybe someone else with some more knowledge could chime in hear. free bump anyways. Best of luck in you're search. Bryan |

That yellow substance you're seeing is mixture of oil, water and air. Whenever you see that substance, it's a clear indicator that the engine is not getting up to temperature. Generally, you see this symptom in cars that are used only on short drives. Your oil problem may be due to high crankcase pressures from combustion gases escaping around piston rings or cracked piston(s). But.... It also may be due to that "yellow" substance in the engine breather system. This would cause higher than normal oil tank pressures pushing the oil up through the oil separator tank. I would suggest you get the engine up to full operating temperature for a while and then have the oil changed immediately. Also, if you oil temp gauge never gets to the first small hash mark above the rest point, you are not at normal operating parameters. I would also suggest you change motor oil manufacturer. Go to Mobil 1 V-Twin 20-50 and you will never see sludge buildup. I'm sure there other good choices out there, but judging from your driving habits, this is a safe bet.

Thank you very much Bryan and Dave for your suugestions, I checked the surgical glove over the oil filler hole method @ idle after warm up this morning there is some blowby white smoke coming out of the oil filler hole with the pud pud sound but the presure from the hole did not blow the glove up like a flag instead the glove just lift a little bit along with the pud pud sound, is that normal? The leak down test was done 20,000 miles ago, I think it was between 2 to 10% between cylinders, if the rings and the pistons are bad will that be smoke coming out of the tail pipe as well as lack of power when driving? I do not see any smoke while driving but just @ start up and when the air filter housing was filled of oil. I just drained all the hot oil and going to replace it with mobil 1 V Twin 20- 50 to see what happen.
Thanks again, Yahow |
