twin turbo intercoolers
Hi all I am changing the side mounted intercoolers on my twin turbo setup as these have been proven to be to restrictive and choking the engine on the dyno.. so as room is a problem.. what is the method of calculating intercooler core size for the turbos ..keeping in mind I am chasing around 650 rear wheel HP. I want to keep these intercoolers in this location and not on top of the engine as I simply do not want to cover the flat fan setup ..any pictures of this setup would be great..cheers

early 934's had a w2a intercooler. using modern tech would be easy to package them in the location you've got them, with heat sinks up front?

It is difficult to calculate core size, as the fin density inside the core will have a substantial impact on how much it will flow (as well as how much it will cool). The best thing to do is contact the core manufacturer directly and see what they recommend. The two best ones here in the states are Bell and Garrett. Garrett are supposedly more efficient (higher fin density), but only have limited sizes available compared to Bell. Factory racers seem to think that Secan are the outright best, but very application dependent and very expensive and difficult to get ahold of.
If you don't mind sharing, what core brand and sizes do you currently have installed? And do you have pictures of the setup you could share? |

I've been using Spearco cores for over 20 years. Here is the sizes and HP ratings. See if any of these will fit...

Click on Technical Data for the core specs. Do a search on the RUF yellowbird. That will probably give you the best picture ideas.

On top of what GJF has stated, Corky Bell makes intercoolers very cheap for being such a huge asset to the turbo game.
