New exhaust system install - "I'm going in!"
SSI system by RarlyL8 was delivered this week. Phase I is completed. I got the old exchanger nuts off without much difficulty; no broken studs. I've been soaking them with Kroil once per week for the last 3 weeks. Used MAPP torch to heat them cherry red and most of them came right off. About half of them came out with the stud. I am prepared with new studs.
Question: should I use anything on the new stud threads? Anti-Seize? Loctite? I hope to get the entire job done along with K27 install over the long weekend. Please send me positive 930 vibes ![]() I'll post some pics once things get interesting.

Most definately use anti-sieze on the studs/nuts- and both sides of the studs. This way instead of snapping, the stud will just back out next time you take it apart.
Now for re-installing the headers, try to get a torque wrenc on them- I know it sounds like over kill, but it makes a world of diffrence, and get ready to re-torque them after a few heat cycles. You got the hard part done, now you get to relax and just put her back together and enjoy Brian's exhaust. ![]()

I used anti-seize but at the temps they see, I'm not sure it does any good. I know it didn't help on my turbo...
What nuts are you using? I used the copper iamb nuts with new ARP(?) studs in hopes if keeping them tight. |

I'm using OEM bits. Will check tightness after a few heat cycles.

Use copper-based anti-seize. It seems to work better than the standard stuff on the exhaust studs.

Part II
Yesterday I just got the exchanger nuts off. Today I pulled the bumper, muffler, then dropped the entire system as a unit. Looks empty underneath now:
![]() Inspected the exhaust ports and everything looks pretty uniform (whitish color) between the cylinders, and no serious ugliness that I can see. I did notice a little area of wetness on the #6 valve which I am curious about...wasn't really ugly though... Here's the latest addition to my boneyard: ![]() And speaking of ugliness, this is not pretty, but I knew about it when I bought the car. Its been getting worse though: ![]() Now this I was not aware of...new perhaps, but very ugly: ![]() Next up, remove turbo. Then I get to bolt it all back together with the new stuff. I want to chase out the threads before I install the new exhaust studs. Anyone know what size tap I will need?

That is the correct size tap for cleanin out threads however you would be best not using a brand new tap in my opinion and use a older worn tap or even grind a couple slots/grooves up the length of a new bolt and screw in, half turning it back every full turn or so to clean out crap inside the thread.(old trick used to do in my toolmaking days after heat treating steel) Using new tap it is very easy to also cut into thread in soft material of the cylinder heads and oversize making the stud not so tight in thread.

Looking great. Cannot wait to hear of your impressions when finally done. Can you also post a video clip if not too much to ask.

Awesome work! some fiddling with the bracket is normal but it is surely better than leaving it off completely. Is that a 7200?

ps. you bastid - I'm finding mesself gazing transfixed at your ^pic^ now. Something about the blue / silver justposition and the 'lines' of the turbo / can / piping. Just awesome. It's like you near firckin HEAR IT just sitting there.
Given the opp (someday), that's likely the route I'd go too - real decent setup. Kudos. |

I appreciate the words of encouragement gents...
I promise to give a full report of my impressions when its finished, and hope to do a video/audio clip as well. The new turbo is a 7200, a K27"S" to be precise.

Great work and great thread!
Those headers look awesome, and I do too love the color, but then I may be a bit biased. Now to only get mine turbocharged......
