Air pump removal????
Have a 1986 930,engine still equipped with the air pump, steel lines and injectors feeding the exhaust ports, also has an o2 sensor in the exhaust system. What am I getting into here by removing the pump, lines and air injectors?
Any input appreciated.

This could be a real PIA to do with the engine in the car, but I have recently removed all this stuff during a rebuild.
There are lots of related pipes, valves and other gizmos and it's difficult to know where to stop. I just kept removing parts that didn't seem to have a purpose in life any more. You can buy the plugs for replacing the air injectors from Pelican. I do recall the part number being difficult to find because the same part has other applications as well (something to do with brakes?). I kept track of my plumbing revisions (see before and after diagrams below). This diagram is from the back of the Owner's Handbook and is different to the various diagrams I have seen in Porsche and Bentley manuals. My car is an '86 US model so it should be close to yours. Thank you for your response.Did you have any problems after removing all this stuff?Concerned with what the o2 sensor picks up.Was there any change in engine running..............idle,performance,fuel injection? This is also a US car, originally imported into California.

You will have to remove the left hand heat exchanger to be able to access the air injection nozzles. Any heat exchanger is best removed by heating up the nuts holding it on with oxy-acetlene to cherry red and immediately turning the nut off.
Hit the nozzles where they enter the heads with PB Blaster or Kroil before attempting to turn them out. I had a nozzle gall and destroy the threads. If this happens the hole will need to be re-tapped for a pipe plug. All in all, the job should take 2-3 hours but when you are done your car will have lost 20 lb and gained better access around the engine compartment. Search the archives here for more information.

The air injection put air in the exhaust ports during warm-up and then to the cat when the engine was warmed up. The only result of removing the system is a slight increase of emissions when the car is cold started.

I have also been thinking about removing the air pump, valves etc as Bill shows above.
Question: Will I be able to remove the air-pump without taking out the engine? It seems very hard to access and remove the air-pump /Trond |

If you don't want the extra work (and mess) of removing the turbo scavenge pump, you will have to cut the toothed belt that drives the pump. I figured the belt was probably past it's use-by date anyway.

However, I don't have to worry about smog tests or any other type of inspection. Also, daytime temperatures here are always more than 10*C (50*F) even in winter, so cold starts aren't really an issue either.
