Anyone tried external intercooler water mist system?
I had my 930 out on Sunday in 90 degree weather which got me thinking about additional ways to improve power in real world conditions. Running 1.2 bar in that kind of heat, im sure that the intercooler efficiency starts dropping rather quickly.
Has anyone tried an external water mist system, say something with 2-3 nozzles pointed directly over the intercooler core? I found this system just poking around online and it seems like it would work just fine. http://www.seinesystems.com/MPC-Intercool.htm If the claims of 15-20 degree reduction in after intercooler temps is valid that has to equate to a very signficant increase in power (Im guessing 25hp or more). Is this worth doing or not really? |

I have looked at these systems before, but I like the Nitrous or CO2 systems better. Discharging them from a spray bar attached to the I/C would lower temps significantly, as the gas is discharged around 150 deg below zero.... Water would be ambiant air temp...

Im sure CO2/Nitrous would work even better but it might be a bit impractical to keep refilling that versus plain water. I like the idea of external cooling versus say alcohol injection though because its a lot more straitforward to set up and wouldnt require any engine tuning changes. Did you actually install a system like that? Also, is an external water mist system allowed in PCA or other racing clubs?

Use a lightweight rotary compressor with a evaporator core on top of the intercooler instead of the inside of your car.. You will be hotter in the car but the cooled air should really work well going thru the intercooler. Just flip the AC switch on and boost away for hours on end if on the track. No mess or worries about refilling anything.

If your ignition coil is still under the intercooler it might be good to move it to a dry location because the water your spraying on the intercooler is going to go all over everything underneath it. It's like driving in the rain for the motor.
I've seen it installed on a 962 with 2 water jets spraying on the injection mounted intercooler during the imsa grand prix of Palm Beach, Florida in June 1986, and it stopped working during the race. They have improved those water injection systems in the last 20 years. Distilled water would cut down on mineral deposits. You'd have to add some alcohol to the water to keep the water bottle from turning into a science project of slime and protozoa in the summer and clogging things up. It might work for a little while but will need lots of checking and maintenance to keep it reliable for long. The systems that spray nitrous oxide over the intercooler would be much better. No pumps or water.. just a bottle, lines, solenoid, and jets. The motor might even inhale a little of it if the intake is nearby and get a small oxygen boost from it. |

I asked the same question awhile back. The consensus seemed to be to go with a alcohol injection system like 356-930's set up.
When I do have time to do something, it will be alcohol injection. |

You could try something like this...havent had it running yet but it looks promising...
That orange warning sticker is on a 2.5" thick twin-fan puller. Fully shrouded to the core, it sucks a LOT or air through. Motors not in yet so no back-to-back performance comparisons. ![]() Though the air is still at ambient, there is a huge amount of flow going through when the cooler is switched on...and no water/CO2/NO2 to keep filled.
