turbo type

Is the 3LDZ otherwise known as KKK26?
Trying to order some rebuild parts.
Also, is this the same turbo as originally fitted to the 924. Have a friend looking for bits as well.
Thanks
Alan

Yep on the K26; don't know about the 924 link.

No, the 3LDZ is NOT a K26... it is its own unique frame. The 924 did use a K26... nothing like the 3LDZ.

OK, thanks. So, if I was wanting to order parts for my 3LDZ, what category KKK turbo would I be looking for?
Regards
Alan

You can look up parts here:
http://www.turbointernational.com/images/catalog-pdf/Catalog-KKK.pdf

Go to page 31. Where to order... well that may be interesting considering your location. However, if you contacted Borg Warner, I'm sure they could connect you with a dealer that can supply the parts.

Hope this helps...

Dave

Dear Alan,
I'm glad to see that your car is improving all the time.

K26 is used on Audi 100/200, Porsche 931 and 951. It's a smaller frame turbo.
3LDZ is bigger frame turbo originally used on small Mercedes diesel lorries during the 70's. A version of this turbo is subsequently used on Porsche 930. Thus, I don't think K26 parts will fit.

If you are on your way to rebuild the 3DLZ, why not go a bit further and swap it out with optimally sized Garrett design? As you are quite handy (I still remember your home-made CIS plunger piston) I bet that ensuing flange swap won't present any major difficulties.

Regards,

OOPS...my mistake. For some reason I thought they were synonymous. Thanks for the correction (shouldn't have ignored what the left side of my brain was trying to tell me).

From a '79 I have a 3LDZ rebuilt by Garrett, aprox. 200-miles street use.
US $50 and reimburse me for cost of shipping, it's yours.
Chris

Chris,
Many thanks for the kind offer. It is very generous.
I am really just thinking ahead. I have purchased previously a well used core. My 3LDZ seems in good nick at the moment. I just want to get a kit and build up the spare core. But your offer is tempting. May get back to you.

Dave , many thanks for the useful info. My friend with the 924T has spent about 12 mths down here trying to source parts. I found parts for a K26 while looking for my 3LDZ. Every shop he went to came back with No Parts story.

Goran, just waiting on a zork from Pelican (Rarlyl8). Cant wait to fit it. Track day in couple weeks. The car is getting better all the time. (pic) Just trying to finalise tuning the DWUR.
Thanks guys. This web site is invaluable. You guys have been a huge help getting me introduced to turbo.
Regards
Alan

Hmm, you shoulda seen the ones that got away.
Never a dull moment in a 930. Especially in the wet, with a 3LDZ, trying to go hard out (wheel spin in every gear as it hits boost).

I have had that photo of Alan pitching it set as my background on my PC for some time. Great shot.

It took me 12 mths to get that car going. It was a dog when it came off the boat. Could not even get it started. It was supposed to have been 500km from a rebuild ex Japan. There is a loong thread on 'Where to start on a 930' or similar. I had problems from the front end to the back. A year later it was running. Now had about 7 mths track time and tweeking all the time.
Goran and the guys on Pelican have been so much help it is amazing. I knew nothing about turbos and had never driven a turbo car.
So, I'm feeling pretty good about the beast now. It is into the fun bits now - making it quicker.
Wait til the Zork goes on in a week or so. Then I'll get the DWUR tuning finalised. Then....
Regards
Alan

You'd love a K27 HyFlo, if your class permits it. Very progressive and tractable - and more top-end than a 3DLZ to boot. Made my car much less terrifying in the wet.

Bob Watson during a dyno run: "Did you know your car makes 6PSI of boost @ 2400 RPM? That's useful."

I am supposed to stick with the 3LDZ unless it becomes impossible to secure parts etc. Then I can change it. At the moment I'm staying with it, but a K27 I suspect will be a xmas present down the track somewhere.

Alan your zork should be on the way, I shipped to CA the day after you ordered, bung included.
As for your 3LDZ, there are probably still a few places that "warm over" the stock "wink wink" 3LDZ for class racing. I can hook you up if interested.

If you decline Chris's offer I would sure like to have it for that price. I currently do not have a functioning 3LDZ and would like one to use as a baseline for dyno testing.

Brian, I have taken Cris up on his offer - given bits are so hard to source down here - some spares are good. But there was someone advertising one F/S about a week ago - Fredmeister I think. There was no interest in it, The price was around $150 I think, and dropping.
The Zork has just left Pelican - there was a hold up - I oredered a turbo mounting bracket - which turned out to not be in stock. They were waiting to compile order. I requested to send zork on, the delay will mean I will miss next track day with zork. So hoping it gets here next wk.
Another midnight rush coming on I think.
Regards
Alan
PS, may well get back to you on the wink bit - changing turbine ratios? Our rules are slightly flexible, but I like to stay within the spirit of them as much as I can. If I did change the turbo I doubt they would even know - I'm the only track 930 in the country.

Brian, Just checked - he sold it. But listed it as a K26 3LDZ stock 930 turbo. Odd?
Alan
