Need help with 87 Turbo possible purchase

My neighbor is in a bit of a desperate place and has offered me his 87 Turbo coupe. He said bring offers.

I dont know much about Turbos and I would not keep it.

It needs some sort of idle control valve which he has but has not been installed. It also needs a good clean up and OEM fuchs re-installed.

Its black on black has a brand new turbo which is an up-grade.

Where can I get schooled up on these cars?

And

What is a quick sale price that I could get for this car in this market?

Obviously you will need some additional info. let me know what that is and I will approach him and get it all at once.

Car has roughly 90K miles with no rebuild on the motor. IIRC its all stock other than the new turbo.

I will get some pictures.

What else do you need to help out with valuation?

Oh, I want to make him a fair offer - I want to be able to enjoy the car for a few months and then re-sell quickly after I make the re-pairs and changes.

Thanks for any help.

Pictures and history...if known...would help. Street car, tracked, owned by a 85 year old granny....? Verify that everything is stock...muffler, intercooler, exhaust system, air box are visually dead giveaways if not still stock. Transmission shift smoothly, no synchro grinding issues? What is the "new" turbo he has installed? Popular performance enhancements usually end up with a KKK K27 7200 or K27 7006. Any oil leaks, and where are they coming from (well...that can be difficult sometimes). Maintenance records complete and up to date?

If the vehicle has performance modifications, that's not necessarily a bad thing - depending on the market you're trying to reach. If done correctly and professionally, modifications will result in substantial performance improvements and save the future owner the cost of doing those improvements him (her) self.

If you're lookikng to buy this car and just "flip it" for a profit, only you can determine what it's worth to you. Todays market for 930's is at a low point, so it's a good time to buy. How long it will be before these cars command what their herritage is truely worth has yet to be seen.

Thanks

I dont read him as the type to have complete records. He would probably say it got what it needed...

It definitely has a stock intercooler and exhaust, I think he told me once the muffler had been replaced.

I wonder if I could back date it to look like an early RSR and 17" fuchs and have a large market? I would think real Turbos are best kept stock with high quality reversible upgrades.

I guess what I am most worried about is at 90K miles it will need a motor re-build or some other major expensive work to have any market value.

Given the paucity of information, I would guess something in the mid-20s ($25K?) as a move-it-now price?

I think if he need to move it, you could get it for less than $20K IMHO, I myself am in the market for a 930 and have been looking for a while so I would say I have a pretty good idea of the current market.
I have seen really nice 930s (early 80s) for 22-27K and they have not sold.

I may be interested in your neighbors cars, if you do not want it.

Thanks Guys

That is kinda what I am thinking. Early 930s or later 4 speeds with high miles oe weird stuff done to them are low $20K cars right now at best.

Like Jcc said the early ones are setting.

I should probably be a good guy and just help him sell it, but I would love to drive it for a few months (evil grin).

Actually what I want to do is put IROC front and rear bumpers and wing, remove the side skirts, 17x9,11 fuchs and lose all kinds of money on the re-sell :-)

OK PPI

what types of things do I look for in a PPI that is differnt from a NA 911?

Should I just do a leak down and drive it?

Mark makes a very valid point here! You buy it, it may be yours for awhile especially if you start in with the mods you've stated.. Even being stock, as a high miler you better buy it right because that's a slow sale.

Maybe you should just help the guy move it..
