New 930 Owner.

As a fairly new owner of an '89, I'm trying learn various things about it and am attempting to correct the erratic idle and have found that it's kind the nature of the beast with the emission systems, etc. and I wanted to start with removing or disconnecting the Aux. Air Regulator. Exactly where is that located(picture would help) and is that a good decision. I live in Az. so cold start is not too much of an issue. Any advice/help is appreciated.

i wouldnt start by removing the aav. there are many other places to have vac leaks etc that could be the culprit. hold on the others will chime in

The engine just underwent a pretty extensive top end rebuild and I've checked all the hoses for vacuum leaks, etc. and everything seems fine. I've also done a "search" and found that the AAR is one of many of the culprits of idle problems if there are no vacuum leaks so I thought disconnecting it would be a good place to start.

Disconnecting the AAR will result in a low cold engine idle. If that's what you're looking for, then go for it! Or if your engine is perpetually idling too high, the AAR may be one of the culprits if it's malfunctioning. Try this simple test: take a pair of needle nose vice grips or a simple c-clamp and clamp closed the hose leading from the IC to the AAR (coming off the right hand side of the IC). That will stop all air flow through the AAR. If it's working correctly, you'll see an instant drop of idle speed when the engine is cold, and will see no or very minimal effect when the engine is warm.

Nice pic of your car and background! Did you drive to the west coast and took that pic? I'm new to 930, also, so I can't help you with erratic idle.

MikeD94-yes, this picture was taken on Hwy. 1 north of Morro Bay. We were on our way to the Monterey Historics at Lagun Seca.

O.K. Mark, I'll do the hose pinch test in the A.M. and report back. Thanks for the replies.

Beautiful car! I hope that you get it all worked out. I take my car to Jack at Stuttgart Southwest. He knows these cars inside and out and is very reasonable on price.

I did the hose pinch test after the car sat all night and it started right up and the idle hunted for 15-20 seconds then settled down and idled lower than usual,un-pinched 1200 rpm, pinched-800 rpm. However, I left it idling and removed the vise grip and the idle stayed about the same. I drove it to lunch and the idle stayed about 1000 which is fine, but then after sitting for 15 minutes at lunch it started right up and the idle went to 1500 and stayed for awhile, drove it home and pulled in the garage and idle was about 1300. So what do I do next??

Thanks-Roger B.

roger drive the car to get it to operating temp, then pinch the hose again. if the idle drops to a 1000 then the aar is suspect. the little" slide door" is supposed to close, sounds like yours is stuck open.

Roger, even with a properly working AAR your idle will be a little high after a hot engine shutdown for a few minutes. The valve will slowly open up as the AAR cools...even in the hot engine environment...but the idle should settle back down to "normal" within a minute or two of running. The still high (1000, and/or 1300) when fully warmed up makes me want to agree there's a problem with the regulator internal disc sticking or the heating element not working.
You can take it off and go through the motions of visual inspection (stone cold vs. heated up to see how far open the disc is), and check resistance of the heating coil (I think around 25 ohms or so...really can't remember), and check for power to the coil.............or, just put a cork in the whole damn affair as Jim suggests and keep your foot on the throttle when starting from cold to keep it idling.

Here's apicture of the AAR and AAV froma 78' 930.
Your 89' probably does not have the AAV, but the AAR is the same.

left aluminum, with a power cable to heat the bi-metallic part inside when run.

I put a couple rubber caps over the 2 ports and went for a short spin and found that there was some improvement but when I got back home the idle was up to about 1200. I'll try it again today and report back.

Thanks for the advices-Roger B.

Roger;

I know that you checked already, but it REALLY sounds like an elusive vacuum leak to me. Do a SEARCH and check every place that can suck air.
