2 rear torsion bar questions....

1. Can you completely remove the torsion bars without taking off the torsion access cap from the body. If you can't do you have to remove the whole rocker trim and shark fin, do you need to replace the shark fin or can it be peeled back, I imagine this would ruin it... My car is a turbo look carrera with a g50, it might have different torsion caps tho, I know the torsion bars are different to a 930.

2. What if you removed the torsion bars and put the stock spring plates back in (not using rsr spring plates) to run with coils only, will the stock spring plates work with this? Or do you need rsr spring plates? It seems people always use rsr type spring plates when converting to 100% coil overs, I don't understand why you'd have to?

thanks guys!

You have to remove all to get them out. I just cut a semi circle around the access hole to keep as much guard as possible.

You can use coil overs with the stock sprung plates. I have a friend who has them on his race car.

thanks a lot A930Rocket!

Just to clarify, he doesn't use torsion bars with the stock spring plates?

I was just thinking it would make suspension setup much easier than with helper springs combined with torsion bars. Putting on new shark fin would be a PITA though....

It would be totally ghetto to cut up the torsion bars as they came out with an angle grinder, avoiding the need to remove all the side trim and shark fin but would likely work right? Should i never show my face around here again?

He runs just coil overs. You can run both or just the coil overs. If your going to track the car hard, often and use only coil overs, I would beef up/brace the rear strut tops. If just street use with some track time, you'll be OK. Just my opinon.

If your not worried about saving them, then I would cut them as you pull them out. You can always find used or aftermarket to replace. From what I recall, you may only need to cut in half.

Spence,
I recently changed my rear TBs without destroying the shark fin.
After pulling off the rubber strip and unbolting the rocker panel partially, I put two slits in the vinyl sticker just enough to allow the cover plate to be removed downwards.
I stopped the cut at the level where the rubber strip used to cover the sticker.

If you do remove it, I would use the clear 3M stone guard that's used on the nose of many new cars.

I've seen some cars without it and it's a good look.

I replaced mine with some 3M I got off EBay for cheap. Worked very well I think.
