Heat at rear bumper
Obviously the rear bumper of these 930/911's are going to get hot with the muffler inches away from the underside/back of the bumper. My question is has anyone tried lining the back underside to keep some of the high heat temps at bay? I removed my B&B muffler the otherday and it appeared that at one time (out of the factory?) there may have been a foil type liner under there. Which is long gone if that was the case. Any opinions/answers.

yes, i double-lined mine on the inside top and inside back. also lined the heat shield. in new orleans, i've found my car enduring 98F temps and stuck in traffic... the back would get hot!
infrared temps on outside top of bumper above the turbo went from 225 to 150F once i put the double layer of heat matt.... i melted off my first porsche reflector. on second one, now with no problems...

I switched to a zork, no heat shield, and mine stays cool to the touch!

Rather than try and contain the heat, I let mine out. As well as holes in bumper, I removed the rubber seal between body and top of bumper.

Bill, That bumper looks great!
Good point on the rubber seal... Mine has gotten a little deformed from the heat. I thought about notching it out to let heat out of there...

Here's what I ended up doing to protect the rear bumper from the heat on my little custom IROC project. I used some rhinoliner type material, and a thin sheet of aluminium directly behind the Turbo.

I like the ideas above each has its own pro's. The most accessable for me looks to be lining the inside of the rear bumper with the heat wrap. Is that just a tape application or is it a thicker liner material of some sort? If so where should I look to aquire some?

BSKI, the best place that carries it now is bimmerworld, Gold Foil Protective Film (Cooling)
Its kinda on the pricy side but you get what you pay for. Its not just a tape, its very thin but has a barrier material inbetween the gold and the adhesive so it will protect whatever you put it on. Its truly great stuff to use, can be slightly difficult to work with at times but like any hi-perf material, it takes patience to lay out and get right.

Doesn't the blanket reduce the life of the turbo though? Just wondering. Looks fantastic though and I bet it helps with the spool due to heat retention!

Reaper,
Hmmm, the life of the turbo? I'm not sure I know what that would be. My first one died because the air injector tubes disintegrated in the exhaust chambers and ended up in the turbine blades. I don't do WOT, 1.0 bar runs very often, I use Mobil-1 20-50 synthetic oil, my oil pressure is very high, and there is no evidence of coking in the turbo oil drain or in the oil filter when I cut it open. It does get hot faster and stay hot even when the boost is 0. The only downside I can see is that instead of scaly, flaky rust on the outside of the hot section, mine has granular, tiny rust crystals on the outside of the turbine housing. But hey, the hot side is cast iron and pretty thick. Has anyone seen one of these K27 turbos rust through the hot side? Mark
