911 Turbo 'NB' ready to roll...

My 83' 911SC finally saw the light of day...after 7 years rest, with a re-worked 915 w/Proforce clutch/flywheel pakage and a fresh 86' 930 motor, the car has been quite a revelation since putting roughly 3500 miles on it. It's more car right now than I am driver. 'NB' is for a narrow-body, sans the more extended size, weight, and aero drag of the standard 930 set-up.

911 Design in Monclair did the conversion(which was a lot more extensive than I imagined...) and did some fine-tuning/adjusting afterwards pro bono. Slightly upgraded k-27, no a/c install. Stock US 86 Turbo exhaust, w/baby wastegate muffler. Wonder if I should junk the K&N that came with the car and go to stock air-filter? 3.3L US

Did the same to my 82SC Targa- to 3.3turbo back in 1994. LOTS OF FUN!!! The US exhaust is VERY restrictive...Try to get your hands on a EURO or Rarly's. Walt |

Congratulations! I am hoping to get mine on the road in the next couple of months. We should start assembling the engine this weekend or next.

Thats what I hear...the Turbo can gain a good percentage of HP(and maybe torque too) with a better system.

Not to knock the idea of aftermarket exhaust (especially Brian's) being a good thing, but haven't I read somewhere here that the later exhausts (we're talking I think beyond '86) are no more restrictive than the Euro's and are actually not so bad as far as a stock setup is concerned? I could be all wet... Exhaust headers are the only external engine modification I have left to do and if it doesn't gain me much over my stock '87 setup, then it's not worth the money or effort in my mind. Mark

I have been told the present system on this car is a choker...not such an issue on the normally aspirated cars(they run better with cat's/EGR's etc all hooked up. The turbo motors like to run 'open' per se, and tend to get an bit of advantage running in this mode.

Maybe down the road, a Garrett, etc, but I'll stick with the factory unit for now. Last edited by Tilikum Turbo; 08-30-2010 at 01:59 PM.. |

Yes the '86 USA heat exchangers are the same as the '78-'89 Euro so you have the 300CHP system. All the stock mufflers are restrictive so opening that up will help some. Enjoy!

I am also curious to how the 915 gearbox would hold up. Any internal mods to the transmission?

The key I am told with the 915 mated to the 930 is not to beat the car in the 1st gear out of the hole(such as revving hard and dumping the clutch). 1st gear is also very low, so it just gets the car rolling, and then you can really step into it. 2-5 gears all are excellent for response, but strangely enough, 5th-gear seems to be the best, as it seem best suited to the motor, and impresses me the most(although those on-ramps in 2-3 are a LOT of fun!). I gutted a LOT of the car, so it's down to 2450LBS, with almost 300HP, so the power/weight ratio is excellent. One drawback on the older 3.0L verses the 3.3L turbo...MUCH more thirsty for fuel! But I love her!
