Totally newbie question, but I just don't know....does my 1982 930 have an internal or external regulator?

Craig, Can't tell by the pic.. Look next to the fuse block on the left of the pic in front of the fuel filter. That's where the external alternator is. All replacements have internal ones so if that's your question, you'll be unplugging the old one.

Hard to be completely sure by that photo, but I am going to guess internal.
It looks to me like the two coils and your custom intake plumbing are taking up the space where the external regulator would normally sit.

Hot damn, ya'll are great. Thank You!
Should I R&R the alternator to have it rebuilt or get a rebuilt unit? Good source if rebuilt unit bought?

The best way to go is a new one. Next I'd get a rebuilt one, from just about any supplier. ^ertex ^uto is where I got my last one for the best price, but check here as well.
